The word "couture" gets tossed around a lot these days, and its overuse has watered down the meaning of haute couture. In French, couture simply means "sewing" or "dressmaking," but in English parlance couture is an abbreviation for haute couture, which translates to "high sewing" (or more commonly "high fashion.")
The Arizona Costume Institute (ACI) was founded in 1966 to support Phoenix Art Museum's Fashion Design Department in the acquisition and preservation of garments and accessories of historical and aesthetic significance. It also promotes appreciation of fashion design through programs and support of the Museum's exhibitions.
